Seal Basics & Information

What is an O-Ring?

An O-ring is a mechanical seal with a circular, doughnut-like cross-section that prevents the passage of fluids or gases. They're used to create a water-tight or air-tight seal in hydraulic, pneumatic, and other systems. O-rings are made from various elastomer materials depending on the application requirements.

Types of Elastomers

Nitrile (NBR): The most common elastomer for general-purpose applications. Excellent oil resistance and cost-effectiveness.

EPDM: Ideal for water, steam, and coolant applications. Excellent for automotive and cooling systems.

Silicone: Wide temperature range capability (-60°C to +220°C). Commonly used in medical and food-grade applications.

Fluoroelastomer (Viton®/FKM): Superior chemical resistance and high-temperature performance. Used in aerospace and harsh chemical environments.

Polyurethane (PU): Exceptional abrasion resistance, making it ideal for dynamic applications and harsh dusty environments.

Common Seal Failure Modes

Extrusion: Seal material flows into the clearance gap due to excessive pressure.

Erosion: Abrasive particles wear away the seal surface.

Chemical Attack: Incompatible fluids degrade the elastomer material.

Temperature Degradation: Exceeding the elastomer's temperature limits.

Poor Installation: Incorrect sizing, groove design, or installation procedures.

Tips for Extended Seal Life

  • ✓ Select the correct material for your application and fluids
  • ✓ Ensure proper groove dimensions per industry standards
  • ✓ Install seals carefully to avoid damage to edges
  • ✓ Keep systems clean to prevent particulate contamination
  • ✓ Maintain correct operating pressures and temperatures
  • ✓ Perform regular maintenance and inspections
  • ✓ Use backup rings in high-pressure applications to prevent extrusion
